I met Holli & Edson through Holli’s mom, Deb. Deb is my neighbor, and we introduced ourselves after our dogs barked (ok, just my dogs were doing the barking) along our fence, and chased each other back and forth, back and forth (the dogs, not Deb and me).
We got to talking about what we did for a living, and I told her I was a wedding photographer. Well, that’s great because her daughter had just gotten engaged!
Shortly after that, her beautiful daughter, Holli, reached out to me inquiring about shooting her wedding. Now, normally, I meet with potential couples to make sure we’re a fit, and to go over my collections, the entire process, and what to expect from me as their wedding photographer; however, we weren’t able to do that because Holli & Edson live in Chicago. I could tell after talking to her on the phone that we would make a great fit … and let’s be honest, if she’s her mother’s daughter, we are golden! With that being said, I first met Holli & Edson when they were back here for their engagement session. We had a blast, and ever since then, I couldn’t wait for their wedding. I knew it would be an emotional wedding, as Holli and her family lost their dad/husband back in January of 2014. Although her did wouldn’t physically be there, I knew there would be a lot of talk about him, and wishes that he was there. And, he was always there with Holli, and he was on her bouquet. You’ll have to check out the beautiful charm she did for her dad.
The couple got ready at the Embassy Suites Downtown, and this is when I first saw Holli for the day. She looked stunning with her hair done by the talented Whitney Allie, and her make up was absolutely gorgeous, done by the talented Ivy Boyd. I then saw her flowers … you guys! These were made of wood! WOOD! They were so so so cool!
The ceremony took place at the Sylvan Theater at Greenwood Park. Everything was perfect! They were surrounded by family and friends from all over (majority from Mexico), and there were a lot of tears and laughter floating around the ceremony.
From there, we headed to the reception at the amazing Iowa Tap Room, where there was even more tears and laughter! Make sure to check out the party favors. They were handmade in Mexico, and were used to hang from their guests neck and fill it with Tequila (or I assume any type of liquid). I took some for my kiddos and they LOVE them! They just fill them with water :))
After the speciality dances, Edson’s family dressed him in an apron, handed him a baby doll, and put a broom in his arms. As he walked around, sweeping the floors, Holli was behind him whipping him with a whip! It was the funniest thing I have seen in a long time, and such a great Mexican tradition! The tradition symbolizes that the man is now whipped, and has to do more around the house for his family. Check it out below!
